Created in 1927, this film in many ways reflects the emergence of the German expressionist in which could be said to be an artistic response to the fear within Germany embedding themes of turmoil and psychological discomfort within the films. within the metropolis, I appreciate, the way in which it ignited the science fiction drama merging themes from German expressionism as seen through the camera angles and distorted scenes of architecture. Regarding the use of set design, I am particularly drawn to the way in which the film explores architecture with the camera shots using old-school set techniques. The film captures the of future which from a modern days perspective, is interesting to see the way in which they thought technology would evolve. I believe the color pallet within the film complemented by the dynamic use of camera angles conveys a futuristic feel which is inspired by the movement art Deco. Although this film could be considered advanced garde I found it interesting the way in which the film focusses on art deco style architecture, embedding geometry within the sets. Although I would consider it very advan-garde for the plot is very unconventional of the time but reflects the codes and conventions of a sci-fi

Equally, I am drawn to the way in which costume is also used to exploit the stereotypical conventions of science fiction drama. Much like the film, the cabinet of Dr Calagari, I am drawn to the way cameras follow the perspective of one character using lighting sets to explore their emotions. Equally, the costumes presented within the films can be seen to have inspired other great films such as cp 30 in star wars suggesting the way costumes started to construct genre.
